New Moon: The Hits and the Misses, Moon’s review part 1

The claw is in the details

Dear New Moon, LTT-ers and anyone ever in the world involved with this,

After seeing New Moon for the third time (obviously I’m not a true fan as my viewing number is not in the teens at this point) I think I can safely start to review the film with a discerning eye. I’m finally past the freak out/totally in awe/blinded by the abs stage and ready to give this a whirl and put my thoughts on virtual paper.

I think the key phrase for New Moon is: “The devil’s in the details” and Chris Weitz must have made a deal with the devil, like Rob did, because he nails it. From the very first shot of Bella waking up next to the tattered copy of Romeo and Juliet with the cover that looks an awful lot like Voltera, I knew we were in for a great ride courtesy of someone who “got it.”

While on the whole I think New Moon is light years ahead of Twilight in terms of the overall product and as my brother (in the industry and knows a thing or two) says Twilight looks like “student film” where they cut a lot of corners by being lazy instead of creative whereas New Moon is actually a total product with a vision and a pay off. New Moon is definitely not without it’s faults, and you know us here at LTT we love a good fumble (Buttcrack Santa, Spider Monkey?) so…

Let’s examine some of the hits and misses of New Moon the movie…

This scene kills me EVERY time

Jacob/Taylor Lautner
This guy actually showed up and ACTED! He had emotions, they were complex and interesting. He emoted with his face and body and didn’t rely solely on blinking, stuttering or squinting to show how much pain you’re feeling to even be near your “la tua cantante.” Did I really just use that phrase? Apparently so. Just imagine it said in Aro/Micheal Sheen’s creepo voice. Not only did he emote well he made the audience laugh. Of the three times I’ve seen it men in the audience seem to react the best to Jacob, laughing at his jokes and generally just relating. My favorite line of his? “Don’t get me upset, this will get very ugly!” Bra-freakin-vo Taylor Lautner! Big Daddy, take this kid out for a McRib but hurry they’re only back for a limited time!

Let's see who can run the slowest and dazzle the mostest!! AND GO!

Future Bella as a vampire/Edward sequence
The slow-mo running, the khaki Anne of Avonlea outfits, the SLOW MOTION running?! Cheese with a capitol C. I get the reason behind the slow-mo which is better than Cathi’s half assed special effects way of making them run super fast but all 3 times I’ve seen it (yes, including opening night) people laughed.

More hits and misses more biker gangs more LSD trips more awesomeness after the cut!

Teeny tiny director on a motocycle

David Slade as the creepy biker in Port Angeles
It was so nice of him to fill in when the original actor who was playing the biker dude got sick. Good way to bond with your actors David! Also, it’s a wonder Charlie lets Bella go to Port Angeles at all at this point the crime rate is so high what with drunk frat dudes trying to rape high school girls lost in an alley way or the Hell’s Angels trying to recruit said high school girls to be their biker mama’s. They might as well rename that place Port Compton.

Pass me some of whatever you guys are having! WHOOOO!

Bella drowning in the ocean
What was supposed to be a really sad poignant moment ends up more like an Acid trip at a Grateful Dead weekend in the 60s with arguably the worst sync in the movie using Grizzly Bear’s Slow Life. Ugh. 2 out of 3 times the audience laughed and I gotta agree with them. The music kills the scene. What a missed opportunity.

tag you're it!

Fight/Chase scene through the woods between Wolfpack and Victory to Thom Yorke
Probably my favorite scene of the movie next to “the breakup (bella and jacob).” Hands down the best sync of the movie placing Thom Yorke’s Hearing Damage over the scene. SO GOOD. Like ridiculously good. It was like watching serendipity happen only it was totally planned. Chris Weitz and the editor and music crew created a piece of art with this sequence. Who says fight/chase scenes need to be set to up beat, in your face rock music? The mid tempo, almost trance like quality of Hearing Damage was a revelation when paired with super speedy wolves slowed down to half time while the blackbird overhead flies at an even slower pace. All the while Victoria and the wolfpack are playing a

I believe I can fly... I believe I can touch the sky!

game of cat n mouse with that back and forth feeling only enhanced by the music. It’s the little details like that that show me Chris Weitz didn’t treat this like just another cheesy teen franchise movie. That he made purposeful, artistic decisions to not only tell a better story but to appeal to those outside the so-called Twi-teen demographic. For this sequence alone I gotta give it up again to Cee Dubs. I may be coming off like a fangirl but it’s not without merit. I don’t just give out my love and affection freely like Kellan at a TwiCon event.

(I wish someone had already ripped this scene onto Youtube… sadly they have not…)

When I sat down to write this I thought I could wrap it all together in one little post but this is already so I’m gonna break up the rest of my hits and misses review to my next LTT post! Stay tuned! Don’t touch that dial!

All the wrong I’ve done will be undone in song,

So whaddya think? Were your hits and missed the same as mine? Or did you like the Anne of Avonlea montage? Don’t care for Taylor’s performance in NM or did you switch teams?! Let’s talk about it here, then take all our other daily convo’s over to the forum!

Thx Lion & Lamb for always having the best galleries!

  1. Devil in the details…my thoughts exactly

Running Bella and Edward was the worst idea ever – I am pretty sure someone was high when they made that decision…duh..prelude to BD..FAIL.

Loves me Taylor – if there were Oscars for non Oscar quality movies – Taylor would have won hands down. I hope eveyone else gets on board with the skillz for Eclipse…seriously – 3rd time is a charm I hope?

Chase scene was Brilliant – just executed clap golf clap…

Drowning was not that bad but I like acid trips. My issue was… I don’t know why Sam yells at Jacob while he is rescuing Bella when he is only standing like 5 feet from them on the bugs me…

I am holding a out a tad till the full review is up – but so far awesome review Moon…can’t wait till the next post.

  2. Okay, I’m a bit nervous here since it’s my first time commenting (even though I’ve been following this site religiously since before June). Hi everyone! Nice to meet you. I will never be as witty as all of you but I figured I’d finally add something to the conversation after all these months. I’ve been Team Jacob since the first time I read the books and have really fallen under the spell that is Lautner (wrong but so right) so I can fully admit that I was really nervous that he wouldn’t live up to my expectations of Jacob in NM (acting wise, anyway). With that said, it’s SO great to see that he did such an awesome job and that a lot of people, though still Team Edward, loved Jacob in the movie and didn’t miss Edward while he was gone.
Wow, that was fun! Thanks for letting me add my 2 cents. Now, how do I get a picture on here?

  3. Wow, over 200 comments! I’m late as usual!

I love the drowning scene, I love the music and the vision of Edward. It was scary when Victoria started swimming towards Bella. Anyway I also love when Bella gets dragged by Jacob and her hand sweeps over Edward’s face. It’s just beautiful. I’ve always liked that scene. If she would have died, Edward’s face would have been the last face she saw.

  4. I really loved this movie but after a day to absorb the details stalker cousin and I had a few complaints:
    1. There was no depth of emotion on the parts of Edward & Bella. I didn’t get that they were hot for each other at all.

    2. The viewing of Romeo and Juliet was supposed to be a private moment between them and in the movie it was done at school. That’s a miss for me.

    3. I hate about the books and movie that Bella does not immediately put her papercut finger into her mouth, but I guess that if she did the whole premise would not be there.

    4. Edward does not spend the night at Bella’s and hence there is no emotional connection that I can see or feel, and that bothers me. I didn’t feel it.

    5. I love the months passing scene. It resonated with me for days. The song choice was perfect.

    6. Loved that Bella wrote emails to Alice, and that one shot showed the entire month of February.

    7. I loved loved loved the scene with Charlie in the woods, Harry Clearwater , Victoria and then the wolves chase her with that beautiful Thom Yorke song in the background, then the culmination of Bella cliff jumping. It was beautiful, and also really resonates with me still.

    8. I did not like how the scene with Alice was so short. I wished it had been over days like the book and that the conversation between Alice and Charlie actually took place. I felt that was important.

    9. The scene at the clocktower was gorgeous, and when Bella runs into him it’s gorgeous, but the rest is rushed through. I liked their “make up” scene but that should have happened in her bedroom. Also, he did not hold her close enough and that bothered me. In the book she couldn’t get close enough to him and that was not evident in the movie.

    10. The bedroom scene could have been better and they could have talked more before the vote. Again, there was not alot of emotion or heat there and I just didn’t feel it.

    11. love the vote scene, Rosalie looks awful.

    12. The proposal should have been in her room. This scene lacked intimacy and the playfulness that Edward had when he knew he had Bella stuck.

    13. No complaints about anything else.

100% better than Twilight, and I guess that is all that matters!

    • Umm, I was just finishing up reading the comments & was about to finally type one, but I see you beat me to it Tracyface :0) Thank you for posting the one scene that I really missed which was -Yes the return of a Cullen – Alice. They should have included when Bella pretends to be asleep on the couch & Alice is listening to Charlie explain how devasted & sick Bella was when “He” left her…..I agree that they rushed that whole scene.

Still beats Twilight though due to a much-much better director!

    • Yes! I totally missed Alice’s sleepover and eavesdropping Bella!

  5. I agree with everything you said….except the drowning scene. I loved the music for that part. A little rushed, but I liked it. And i kinda like the running. lol Mostly now though, i just laugh.

    Love the hearing damage scene……

  6. My first comment ever!

MISS: I hated the break up scene. Seriously. They both ruined it for me. I wasn’t cool with the no eye contact, stuttering and soft voices. Fail.

HIT: Emmett in vote scene. I loved his “sister” line. ❤

I have so many more but I don't have time to type them out – I have to leave my terrible desk and go home! Work is over, yay!

  7. what really touched me was seeing how hard bellas depression was on charlie. I loved how emotional his scenes were with her !HIT!

What makes me laugh is when Jacobs voice gets all cute and prepubescent boy when he says the line “things are about to get very ugly” Its not intimidating at all. Not even my baby cousin would be afraid of that !MISS!

Eric Yorkie crying during Romeo and Juliet in class movie !HIT!

when bella joins the group for lunch and agrees to see face punch (lolol), Jessica has the best line and says it in the most hilarious way “movie night with Belluh!” hahah HIT HIT HIT

    • OMG! Forgot about Eric crying! That was hilarious!

Of course Face Punch movie part is hilarious too! “I’m gonna punch you in the face”, “Oh yeah! I’m gonna punch Yoou in the face!”

  8. Wow, this is my first comment on a blog, ever! I figure since I waste all my time on this site anyway, I might as well put my two cents out there. So, here’s what I have to get off my chest:

1.) Michael Sheen is a DILF. Seriously, has anyone else seen Underworld 3? I also think his casting as Aro shows C Dub’s commitment to good acting! Preach!

2.) I think Summit is Team Jacob. Not that I think there’s anything wrong with that. But seriously R Pattz is a hottie, but if you didn’t know the books and hadn’t seen Rob’s Vanity Fair pics and you had to choose between
a.) Hunky, hot-skinned beefcake in jorts who dotes on you, or
b.) soft-spoken, pale, lipstick-wearing emo dude with a claw hand that LEAVES YOUR ASS IN THE WOODS, who would YOU pick?

    Just sayin.

  9. This is my first very comment. MILESTONE ALERT!!!

So any way a few of my hit and misses

1)Jacob/Taylor (of course. That kid is RIPPED)
2)Emmet’s only line (“Dating an older woman. That’s hot”)
3)Jacob saying “Don’t get me upset!”
4)CHARLIE (a world famous ladies man in my books and DILF of the year)
5)When Bella runs into Edward in Italy and he whispers “heaven” *gasp*
    8) Aro being all happy and Marcus (or Caius don’t know which is which) being all spooking and breathy.
    9)Jasper (minus the wig).
    10)All fighting, chasing sequences.
    11)Paul and Jacobs transformation.
    12)Jacob in the rain.
    13) when Bella Jacob and Mike go to see “Face-Punch” and all the dialog associated with that scene.
    14) Jacob getting angry and threatening to put Mike in the hospital.
    15) At the very start when the moon started to fade and the words new moon were behind it. The atmosphere people the atmosphere!!!

1)The fact that i saw it for the first time with my sister who immediately started to verbally bash it as soon as the end credits started.
2)The fact that Edward didn’t change his clothes at all after the party (well he is a vampire so he wouldn’t sweat or anything) and after all those months there is only one pathetic little rip in the shirt. Purl-ease!!
    3)Jasper’s wig
    4) The fact that Jasper only had two lines (but he did it so well didn’t he)
    5) The Slow-mo running vision.
    6) After Italy (preferred it in the book when she thought she was dreaming)
7)Edward always being so serious and “deep” and intense about his feelings for Bella.
8)The ending “cliff hanger” when Edward asks her to marry him
9)Bella not hurting her hand when she hit Paul even though she does in Eclipse when Jacob violates her.

That’s all i can think of now.
(I may have been a bit more critical than necessary)

  10. I agree with everyone who’s saying they agree with everything except the drowning scene. I thought it was very cool and the music definitely did not ruin it. I didn’t hear anyone laugh, but then again, I wasn’t paying attention to anyone else in the theater because I was so immersed in the movie. But I loved that scene!

I also LOVED the scene with Bella and Jacob in the car where they almost kiss. They both did a great job acting that one. I felt the tension, and the desire, and the temptation all so much in that scene!

  11. Miss: I don’t think anyone has mentioned the “monkey-man” climb Jacob used to get into Bella’s window. I thought for sure that CW would improve on or avoid anything like that oh-so-fake jump into the tree of Emmett’s, but Jacob’s Big Climb didn’t look much, if any, better.

  12. Where is Cyndi? Come out to play!

  13. I EFFING LOVE the Victoria chase scene. Having that music in the background created this other worldliness…which is funny seeing as how its wolves & vamps…but still – AMAZING!

  14. loving all the comments and can’t beleive how much time it sucks out of my life… yelling from the other room, “mom, whats for dinner to night”…hmmm…..cereal again?!?… say sweet!….enters in the babies daddy. “Are you still on the computer?”…..ah..mmmm…yes. He rolls his eyes and walks out of the room.
my life is all consumed to you wonderful peeps.
one question i came up with after watching it twice is where is Aro’s guard Renata??? In the book she is constantly behind him or next to him. I didn’t see that in the movie. Did anyone else?
Again, thanks for the laughs and almost pees in the panties from reading these posts. This truely makes my day.
Sorry for the lame FIRST TIME POST message!
as with all virgins…it will get better with pratice!!

  16. I almost agree with everything you said…. Almost. But I thought the drowning scene was good. I loved that they added Victoria in there. The only reason I didn’t think that particular scene was fantastic was because I thought the way Bella flailed her arms and legs around looked a little silly… Other than that, Iiked it.

I have to agree with the Alice’s vision part, because people were definately laughing (including myself), but mostly at the outfits. Maybe I haven’t seen the movie enough or something though because I still consider that to be a hit.

As for my opinion of the biggest miss: Edwards lipstick! I haven’t officially ever picked a team because I love me some Edward and Jacob, but I really couldn’t get over his plum colored lips. Fail.

  19. I’ve only seen it twice. I want to see it again, but I think 3 will be my limit. It pisses on Twilight from a great height but still didn’t live up to the expectations I was trying not to have. It felt a lot like Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix to me–a video book report. It felt like somone was showing me a digest of what happened in the book rather than just telling the story. The only seen I really connected to was the blank pages seen.

WIN = “Bra-freakin-vo Taylor Lautner! Big Daddy, take this kid out for a McRib but hurry they’re only back for a limited time!”

  20. Yeah, Sorry Chris, but MAJOR FAIL on the music placement in most of the film.

I cringe and feel sorry for Grizzly Bear for the water scene.

    Oh well.

  21. billy burke was funny…. but i would like to talk about those giant ass muffins emily made-i thought it was chicken breast at first (her scar was 98% perfect) i don’t think it looked real enough. i think they should’ve filmed the seen where Alice chewed Rosalie out over the phone (hopefully it’s an outtake on the dvd)…. and lastley I would like to know has anyone discussed what they’re doing for the t.v. premier of twilight???

  22. oh and also i want to discuss why Bella felt like she didn’t need to SHOWER for those three months in that chair…

  23. What bothered me most about the drowning scene was that damn cigarette butt. REALLY the only thing I see when I watch that scene not that I have been 6 times or anything.
